We all want to feel warm and comfortable on those cold winter nights. It can be difficult to do so, though, with the rising costs of living, to be able to utilize our heating systems as much as we want to.

The secret to a durable and efficient heating system this winter comprises a few different tips and techniques you can use to ensure you remain warm and comfortable in your home without the additional costs of running your heating 24/7.

The first tip is a combination of two things you can do.

1. Layers

a. During winter, it is important to wear layers of clothing. This is because when you go from inside a building to outside, the temperature changes can be quite contrasting. So, by wearing multiple layers, you can then decide to either keep that extra jumper on or take it off.

2. Keep your home heating system at a lower temperature

When at home, it is a good idea to keep the temperature as low as possible. Around 18-20°C is usually ideal, as advised by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment, and Water. This will keep it warm enough for you and your family, but not so warm that when you go outside to the freezing cold temperature, it will be a massive shock to your body.

It is also recommended to ensure the thermostat remains at the same temperature. Changing it even by 2-3°C will make it work so much harder and will cost quite a bit more in your next energy bill.

Other things you can do to ensure that your heating system is running efficiently during the winter months are:

1. Get the right insulation for your home

a. Having the correct and appropriate insulation installed in your home will assist in keeping the heat in. This includes ensuring any heating ducts are insulated to reduce your heating system from working so hard.

2. Look into a potential system upgrade

a. Sometimes, the most efficient thing you can do for your heating system is to upgrade either part or all of it. Whilst this may be a bit of an expense in the short term, it will certainly save you much more down the track.

b. When looking to upgrade your heating system, look at all the available options to ensure you are making a well-informed decision. At CoreTemp Australia Solutions, we offer a wide range of heating and cooling options. You can look at our different heating options and make sure to contact us for any questions.

c. One really great way to minimize your home’s energy usage is to have a zoned heating system installed. This will allow you to only heat the areas being used, rather than having to heat your entire home. This can be done by installing one of CoreTemp Australia’s AirSmart Indoor Environment Systems, which, when coupled with Stiebel Eltron heat recovery ventilators, will not only heat your home in one of the most efficient ways on today’s market but will also keep the air quality as clean as possible.

3. Have your heating system regularly maintained

a. By having your heating system regularly maintained and checked for safety, you can be sure that it will be as durable and efficient as possible.

b. It is recommended that your system be checked at a minimum of every 12 months, but preferably every 6 months. RACV recommends you don’t wait until winter to get your system serviced.

c. You can also do regular self-checks to ensure you keep the durability and efficiency of your heating system. This can include checking the following for issues:

i) Frequently, either clean or replace your air filters. This will keep your airflow at its peak.

ii) By checking for any leaks in your ducts or gaps within your heating and cooling system, you can make sure there is a lower chance of losing heat and reduced efficiency within your entire system.

iii) You can also check your home to see if there are any door or window gaps, as this is one way quite a number of homes tend to lose heat quickly.

It is very important to contact your installer if you have any concerns regarding your heating and cooling system, as they will be able to either come and check any potential issues or reassure you that it should be working correctly.
